چکیده

Induction-induction is a principle for defining data types in Martin-Löf Type Theory. An inductive-inductive definition consists of a set A, together with an A-indexed family B : AÑ Set, where both A and B are inductively defined in such a way that the constructors for A can refer to B and vice versa. In addition, the constructors for B can refer to the constructors for A. We extend the usual initial algebra semantics for ordinary inductive data types to the inductive-inductive setting by considering dialgebras instead of ordinary algebras. This gives a new and compact formalisation of inductive-inductive definitions, which we prove is equivalent to the usual formulation with elimination rules.

Bi-inductive structural semantics

We propose a simple order-theoretic generalization, possibly non monotone, of settheoretic inductive definitions. This generalization covers inductive, co-inductive and bi-inductive definitions and is preserved by abstraction. This allows structural operational semantics to describe simultaneously the finite/terminating and infinite/diverging behaviors of programs. This is illustrated on gramma...

Contextual equivalence for inductive definitions with binders in higher order typed functional programming

Correct handling of names and binders is an important issue in meta-programming. This paper presents an embedding of constraint logic programming into the αML functional programming language, which provides a provably correct means of implementing proof search computations over inductive definitions involving names and binders modulo α-equivalence. We show that the execution of proof search in ...

The Well-Founded Semantics Is the Principle of Inductive Definition, Revisited

In the past, there have been several attempts to explain logic programming under the well-founded semantics as a logic of inductive definitions. A weakness in all is the absence of an obvious connection between how we understand various types of informal inductive definitions in mathematical text and the complex mathematics of the well-founded semantics. In this paper, we close this gap. We for...

Leaving the Nest: Nominal Techniques for Variables with Interleaving Scopes

We examine the key syntactic and semantic aspects of a nominal framework allowing scopes of name bindings to be arbitrarily interleaved. Name binding (e.g. λx.M) is handled by explicit name-creation and name-destruction brackets (e.g. 〈xMx〉) which admit interleaving. We define an appropriate notion of alpha-equivalence for such a language and study the syntactic structure required for alpha-equ...

A Logic for Non-Monotone Inductive Definitions

Well-known principles of induction include monotone induction and different sorts of nonmonotone induction such as inflationary induction, induction over well-founded sets and iterated induction. In this work, we define a logic formalizing induction over well-founded sets and monotone and iterated induction. Just as the principle of positive induction has been formalized in FO(LFP), and the pri...
